Citizens Against Residential Drilling, Inc. is a non-partisan grassroots nonprofit corporation that is raising awareness of the potential environmental, health and economic impacts related to oil and gas drilling in or near densely populated residential areas.

On July 26, 2014 West Bay Exploration from Traverse City began drilling in Shelby Township, the first well of its kind in a densely populated residential area in Southeast Michigan. A permit was sought with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).  Shelby Township officials were notified of the permit in May. Not a single Shelby Township resident was notified this was happening until the work began 24 hours a day 7 days a week before 3:15am on the 26th. Residential homes are just outside of the minimum legal setback for a well of 450 feet.  Michigan House Bill 4746, amended the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act which allows eminent domain for activities related to the extraction of oil and gas, states local municipalities have no rights to oversee or govern this activity.  The State of Michigan has overall oversight for these operations.  Our local state representatives Jack Brandenburg and Pete Lund voted for this bill in 2011  They state they are now working on legislation to change this situation.  Mineral Rights have been purchased by West Bay from the property owner of Nino Homes for this drilling activity taking place in Briarwood Preserves at 25 Mile and Dequindre Roads.  For anyone approached about selling their mineral rights, make sure you understand the facts and are aware of the commitments West Bay or anyone else is promising you.
